Lauding Outstanding Citizens:

SEARCHLIGHT:

SVG should laud these outstanding citizens

03.APR.09

Editor: Over the last five years I have mentioned in the newspapers the names of individuals who have contributed to the nation-building of St.

Vincent and the Grenadines. Some of the names mentioned have been:

Mrs. Shirley Squire, Mrs. Edna Dougan, Mrs. Lucy Cato, Mrs. Beryl Stephens, Mrs. Phyllis Punnett and Mrs. Edith Toney, Mr. Orde Coombs, Mrs. Sheila Regis, Mrs. George Phillips, Mr. George Phillips, Mr.Crispin Gurley, Mr. Charles Hercules, Mrs. Gwennie Jack, Mrs. Irma Norris, Miss Marie Prince and Mr Egbert Samuel.

I do that as an exercise in the promotion of inspiration, reflection and thanks.

The standard for National Heroes of St. Vincent and the Grenadines is set very high, and rightly so. So far, Joseph Chatoyer is the only national hero in the history of the country, and each year there is spirited discussion on the topic of national heroes. I choose to use this month as a period of reflection about others who have made a contribution to the country in some form or fashion. I would like to mention Sir Fred Phillips, Sylvester “Scobie” Taylor, Dr. Vivian Child and a couple of centenarians. Sir Fred Phillips acted as Administrator in St. Vincent for a short stint in 1965 and retired as the Governor of St. Kitts in 1969. I am told that Sylvester “Scobie

Taylor was one of the best footballers in his day, and did a great deal for the advancement of the sport nationally.

Dr. Vivian Usborne Child served as a medical doctor, artist, journalist, author and relentless advocate of seeking a safe way to walk from Villa Beach across to the Aquatic Club area. This still needs to be done. From time to time, mention is made of citizens who have celebrated their 100th birthday. On February 13, 2009, Mrs. Sarah Niles Clarke of the Niles family of St. Vincent was blessed with 100 years, and on March 15, 2009, Ms. Ruby Nanton did likewise. They were both born in St.Vincent and now reside in the United States of America. They strongly hold on to their roots, and St. Vincent is dear to their hearts.

Let us foster and nurture a culture of appreciation for those who have made a contribution and have made the nation proud. We thank them all and salute those who continue to do so without fanfare in different areas all over the country and the world. By their efforts they inspire others to make a positive contribution.

Thanks.

Making a positive contribution- Artie Phills:

Kudos to Artie Phills.  His last stint as leader of the Black Heritage celebration at his church - Christ Church, New Brunswick, New Jersey, was last year on Saturday, 2/23/08. On Saturday, 2/28/09, he was honored at this year's function and a "Phills Fund" was established at the church in his honor.

Artie, thanks  for being an excellent role model.

Hi All,

In addition to Cheryl's response, my siblings and I would like to thank you  - so many of you - for the hundreds of messages of condolence we have received via e-mail, cards, telephone calls etc.  I cannot promise all will be responded to, but please know that all are tremendously appreciated.

I especially thank the members of the clergy who officiated at the funeral, Cheryl King for the lovely eulogy, Susan and Simone Dougan for reading from the Old and New Testaments, Fr. Ulric Jones for the outstanding tribute to our mother and Marjorie (Harry) Browne for that wonderful rendition of "Be still, my soul", members of the Mothers' Union and Girl Guides, who turned out in uniform.  I also thank  those who came from abroad to attend the funeral, and those who travelled long distances in SVG to get there.  As you can see, from Robert Young's pictures, the pallbearers did a good job of not dropping the casket.  I am sure my mother was pleased with her send-off and we owe it all to you.  May she rest in peace.

Irma Dougan

Tribute to the late Linda John Abiaka :

Text of a Tribute

To the Life & Times of Mrs. Linda John-Abiaka St. Paul’s Church, Calliaqua, St, Vincent & the Grenadines Thursday, March 19, 2009 The Rev. Fr. E. Ulric Commissiong-Jones frgaf1941@yahoo.com

This is the second time within a week that I’ve been invited to bring a tribute in honor of a child of St. Paul’s Church and the wider Calliaqua, Choppins and Fair Hall community.

And I do so with an awareness of my own mortality, conscious of the fact that when it pleases God, what I’m doing here today, will be done in my honour by someone near and dear to me.

As I said last Thursday on the occasion of the Eucharist, celebrating the life of Mrs. Edna Dougan, I deem it a blessing to have had the privilege growing up in this great town of Calliaqua and the wider Rathomill, Villa and Glen community and for the gift of this great edifice of St. Paul’s Church, where we grew up to know and love the Lord.

I rejoice in the close relationships which all of us who grew up in this church and community have maintained over these years. It is with a feeling of pride that I say that all of us in this area and who formed part of the early worshiping community here are inextricably connected.

Today, we are assembled in this Holy space to celebrate and thank Almighty God for the life of one of us, Linda John-Abiaka, a cradle Anglican who was baptized and confirmed in this church, where she received her early Christian formation.

But some may ask who is this Linda? She was a child of a closely knit family. She was the child of the late Hariette John and Cally Maloney.

Linda was always a child of quiet disposition if not very reserved. She was a loving and loveable person. I recall the days when this church was packed to capacity on Sunday mornings, and when people walked for miles to be here for worship.

Among such persons were the late Evan Samuel, Henny Johnson, Vira Layne and Hariette John and her family. Further on they will be joined by Anesta Wyllie_Findlay, Louisa Horne & Eren. They walked from Fair Hall and Glen in rain and sunshine to be in the Lord’s House on the Lord’s Day. Linda was in that throng of walkers and worshippers.

Linda and her siblings will return for Sunday School at three o’clock and make the trek back to Fair Hall on foot thereafter. Does it not feel nostalgic?

I recall Linda and her siblings attending Calliaqua Anglican School and her active participation in the St. Paul’s Girl Guides company.

Cheryl Phills-King, communications Director of the Villagers had this to say about Linda in her obit. memo to the Villagers.

‘We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the late Lynda John-Abiaka who passed away on Monday, March 9, 2009, in St. Vincent.

Many of you will remember Lynda as the daughter of Harriet John. They were regular congregants at St. Paul's when we were growing up.

She was also a Girl Guide in our time. May she rest in peace and may light perpetual shine upon her. Lynda will be laid to rest at St. Paul's church next Thursday’.

Linda was a community person and she had a passion to be of service to others. Her dream and her lifelong goal of providing home care for senior citizens was achieved by the acquisition of a care facility at Arnos Vale. She died in the process of getting it started. The dream lives on.

It was just a mere few eight months ago, in July of last year, that Linda, despite the fact that she lived in Cane Garden and worshipped in the Cathedral because of its proximity to her home, saw it most fitting to have organised a family reunion worship right here at home, in St.

Paul’s Church. I am advised that the family on that occasion made a substantial financial contribution to St. Paul’s

Let no one take it for granted - St. Paul’s Church holds very special memories for Linda and all of us, hence her request to be buried from this place, an entitlement which is rightly hers by virtue of her baptism.

I thank the Abiaka, John and Maloney families for their kind invitation to me to bring this tribute, which I regard as an honour and extend to them our sincerest and prayerful condolences.

.

My siblings, Lorna, Selwyn and Louis and their families join Marilyn and me and our family in this regard.

Rest Eternal Grant unto Her O Lord, and let Light perpetual shine Upon Her.

May She Rest In Peace.

Dear Colleagues:

I’m writing to let you know that the publication of The International Encyclopedia of Revolution and Protest is impending; in fact, I received an advance copy of the whole set last Friday (the 20th).  The eight volumes are individually jacketed and the whole set is in a slipcase.  It is gorgeous, really lovely, and a major accomplishment.

As a physical object, it is large but in many ways graceful;  as a scholarly project it is major; inclusive and well-done.

We can all be proud of the work we’ve done on this; many thanks to all of you for your dedication and hard work.

The publication date will be March in the UK and April here in the US ....

Return to Arcadia by H. Nigel Thomas

Product Description
When at age fifty-one, Joshua Éclair emerges from amnesia in a hospital in Montreal, he must explore what makes him want to erase his identity; in the painful process that follows he is forced to confront his past and learns to forgive. This is the gripping story of a man's search for sanity set in the fictional Caribbean island of Isabella and the various places Joshua has fled to.

This is a brilliant, finely accomplished, and intensely moving novel about a very modern predicament: the malformed dysfunctional identity in the global village.

A tale of loss, doubt and dislocation; a young actor's narrative of frustration and failure; a young man's story of a life turned around and finding fulfillment....

Excerpt

It was a turning point in many ways, a great new beginning...Orville would have his place in the sun. All the leading players would be up there in the same firmament.

I allowed myself to fantasize...The interviews. The photographs. Flashbulbs going off. Talkshows. The host saying, "You brought along a film clip didn't you?" Orville, myself or another of the movie's co-stars responding with self-possession, "Sure did." Then the host saying, "So let's roll it!" After that, audience applauses and whistles, admiration from the masses.

Orville, myself or another of the movie's co-stars, scanning our audiences, bowing appreciatively, mouthing the words 'Thank you'. Our eyes brimming with pride. Figurative flowers strewn at our feet.

I imagined the new prominence. Orville, myself, like brothers now, two preachers' boys, arm around shoulder, vaunted to a vantage point of privilege from where we would look out in celebration on this deliciously golden city. Finally, my chance to be quoted by moviegoers. Finally, I was getting my own memorable lines. Finally, I was getting lucky.

Filming was scheduled. On a New York soundstage in a month. On movie screens in a year. If my life would have a Hollywood ending, this, finally, was the beginning. All I could ask for, all I had worked towards, the career fulfillment delayed for so long, was close at hand...Then Orville got arrested again.
