Well, as Joyce says it's now over and everything was done with dignity.
Nesta had planned the whole thing and I am sure that she would be quite
pleased. Everyone seemed to have captured her true essence. Joyce did a
wonderful job and I tried to expand on her theme of friendship.
Paula, frankly, I had not prepared anything to say and it was very much an
impromptu tribute.
For you, H. & C. the gist of it was that I recalled,
"that we both entered GHS on the same day in Form 2B and that Nesta was
shorter than I was.[The whole church chuckled at that one]. Since we had to
line up according to height to go to Assembly or Prayers as we called it,
she had to stand in front of me and each day she would measure with me to
see which one of us was taller. Finally we got to Form 4 , I think it was,
and we were both taller than another student at which point Nesta gave up
her position in line, willingly. We had many happy times together.
When we came to the United States, she came in August and I came in November of 1965, we both lived in The Bronx and shared many happy experiences. Last night, mention was made of our Pedro parties [our friend Caryl (Shillingford) Greaves had made that reference at the wake on Friday night.
We used to play Pedro every Friday night either at our place, Nesta's or
Rose (Agard) Venkatram's until the wee hours of the morning]. Expanding on
Joyce's theme of friendship, friends were very precious to Nesta and she to
them...... Indeed, we were saying this morning that our one regret is that
Mum is not here at this service today. She is not well, and we pray for
guidance as we struggle with finding a way to break the news to her. Daryl,
we love you, we are here for you, stay in touch with us, call at any time
and Nesta, may you rest in peace. Thank You."
It was good to see friends from all facets of her live and there were many
recollections of the "good old days." I saw Babsie Harold whom I had not
seen since I left Barclay's Bank in 1965............. All of Nesta's
brothers and sisters were there. Annelle wrote quite an impressive Eulogy
listing all of Nesta's accomplishments.[ Nesta was the 8th of nine children
and she was predeceased by one sibling]. Annelle read it on Friday night
and her daughter Alana read it at the service on Sat. where tributes
followed from Ambassador Dennie Wilson SVG's rep.to the UN., Joyce & me
and another co-worker of hers at the UN.
Thanks Cheryl for supplying this.
