George Francis passes:

My sincere condolences to the family and friends. The contents of an e-mail I received follows:

Hi folks,
Just to inform you that George passed away peacefully May 22nd at 9.50a.m.  His funeral will be on Tuesday 26th May at 3.00p.m at St.George's Cathedral, Kingstown.  In case anyone needs to speak with Elsa his wife the number is 784-4584798.  Please pass on information to anyone I may have forgotten.  God bless

Other news:
An Italian warship arrested nine pirates after helping a U.S.-flagged container vessel and another ship evade brigands off the coast of Somalia on Friday, a naval spokesman said. An Italian naval spokesman said sailors onboard the warship Maestrale captured the nine pirates in the Gulf of Aden after they fired on the Maria K, a ship from St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) says the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union (ECCU) is in a recession that could deepen later this year. The Washington-based institution said it could not say when the economic situation would improve.

KINGSTOWN, St Vincent - A Barbadian national is among three persons shot and killed by police during a shootout late on Thursday night.

Police said that Dwayne Brian Hubert was shot after lawmen went to the Vermont community following a tip off that he was hiding in the area.

A police statement said that when they reached the area, shots were fired at them and, in the ensuing gun-battle, Hubert and two unidentified men were killed.

Police said they recovered a 9mm pistol and are continuing to search the area for other weapons used by the men.

The incident comes after Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves announced a major anti-crime operation to combat illegal marijuana cultivation, as well as to break-up a known criminal ring in St Vincent and the Grenadines.

The operation involves law enforcement officers from the Barbados-based Regional Security System (RSS) and neighbouring Trinidad and Tobago.

Gonsalves, in an exclusive with the Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC), said the move formed part of a “no nonsense” and “proactive” approach to the matter of crime by his government.

“Let me make the position of the government of St Vincent and the Grenadines absolutely clear. What you see happening in some Caribbean countries where police can’t go into certain areas of the country, that will never happen under my watch,” warned Gonsalves.

A police source told CMC that the men were believed to have been in the hills, but were flushed out by the massive police operation taking place.

Fire guts Buhlers Yachts Ltd
Mar 6th:  Fire officials are investigating the circumstances surrounding a fire late Tuesday evening which completely destroyed the building housing Buhlers Yachts Ltd and its contents.

Police reports claim that the fire started shortly after 6pm at the company’s premises situated at Calliaqua. The blaze drew hundreds of spectators from the Calliaqua and surrounding areas, and caused traffic in the vicinity to grind to a halt. Efforts by the local fire brigade and citizens to bring the fire under control proved futile as the building burned into late Tuesday night. The property is currently being acquired by the government of St. Vincent and the Grenadines for the expansion of the National Coast Guard base, which is situated next door.

I regret to inform you of the passing of Lynda John-Abiaka on March 9th . The celebration of her life will be at St.Paul's church in Calliaqua. My sincere sympathies to her family and friends.

Dear Tony,
Re:  Appeal for funds to supply microscopes to the St. Vincent Boys’ Grammar School
Attached is a copy of a letter I wrote to the Editor of the Searchlight newspaper in St. Vincent that was published in the issue of October 17. The letter was copied, with permission of Searchlight, and circulated by Mrs. Cheryl King (resident in the United States).

The expressions of interest to date have been most heartening.  Many persons have asked how and where/to whom they should send their donations.  I have opened a Roytrin account jointly with Dr. Don (Clement) Iton (a Vincentian resident here in Trinidad) to which donations may be sent.

Should you be desirous of making a contribution, such may be sent to me at the above address, made out in favour of the account below or you may send it directly to the bank.

Lab Equipment needed for BGS - St.Vincent.

Dear Tony,
Thanks for the interest you have shown in the appeal. A specific target has not been set. My thoughts were that we should try to purchase at least 10 stereoscopic and 10 compound microscopes. I know that there is merit in setting a target, but that can also be daunting if one finds that we take a long while to realize the target set.
At the moment I shall be pleased with whatever we receive - as unprofessional as that sounds.
I am heartened by the ready response so many have made. What I am doing at this end is setting up an account in conjunction with one of the Iton brothers resident here (Trinidad) to which persons could send their contributions; Fred Prescod is considering doing something of the sort in Canada. Perhaps you can liaise with him to see precisely what he is doing.

The response to date has restored my faith in my fellow man. What I realize is hat we are capable of doing much once there is some catalyst to galvanize us into action.
Best wishes
Julian Duncan

I will have some information about a Vincentian Author at a later date.

Anyone that can help with the two following items, it would be appreciated:

Hi Cheryl,
..... I have a problem that only a historian could help me. I have for sometime been trying to see when this school (Calliaqua Government School) was opened. The Anglicans do not know  but I have records from about 1914.
See what help you can give me if any on this one.

Subject: Yvette Bowen-Calliaqua Anglican School Inquiry
Date: Sat, 20 Sep 2008 06:20:42 +0000

Dear Yvette,
I know that the school was originally called the Calliaqua Government School and the name changed during the 1950's when I think Fr. Francis Ogden was the Parish Priest. I also vaguely recall my Mum and family saying that the Head-master at the Calliaqua School was Mr. George in their youth, while their Dad, James H.Walker, was the Head-Master of the Belair Anglican School. I do not remember his first name but he was the Grand-father of Anne George so you can touch base with her.
I would recommend that you also try to see if Mr. Charles Hercules who lives in Ratho-Mill and/or Mr. Egbert Samuel who lives in Villa can shed any light on the subject.
They are retired former Head-teachers  and Mr. Samuel was actually the Head-Master at Calliaqua at one point. Also Mrs. Gwendolyn Jack of Ratho Mill and Fr. Huggins might be able to help.  I know that the late mother of Mrs. Ivy Keane Bynoe and her sisters Kinton Keane and Christine Keane Yearwood attended the Calliaqua School. They may be able to help you with some information. How about Mrs. Goodluck ?
I think it would also be educative to know the names of the Principals, the Inspectors of School and other teachers at the school that they remember from as far back as they can and any events/dates they can recall. Let's see how much can be historically documented.
I will pass on your request to the Villagers in the next newsletter and see if they have anything more to add.
Please let me know what you are able to find out.
Have a good week-end !!!
Cheryl.

Also:

Hello, I was wondering if you can help my daughter and their friends with some questions they have to answer for Guides on Friday 19th September. You have alot of historic fact about this country so I believe you will be able to ( at least I hope so lol). The questions are as follows:

Who started the guiding company in Georgetown in 1914?

The individual above had a family member who shares a name with a section of girls in the Girl Guide Movement. What is the name?

Born May 30th 1927, he was the principal of Bishops College Georgetown in 1976, but was much more known for his literary works in St.Vincent. Who is he?

In Feb 2001, a Garifuna Artiste returned to the motherland, Hairouna beating his drum furiously and passionately. What was his name?

The economic hardship of the eruption caused by the evacuation of the northern 2/3 of this part of the island caused PM Milton Cato to quell a brief rebellion which occurred on which day?

I do sincerely hope you will be able to assist and maybe post the answers on your website for others to be edified about their beloved Hairouna. Thanks much in advance for your help.

From the Congressional Record:

ON RISING VIOLENT CRIME IN THE CARIBBEAN AND WHAT SHOULD BE DONE ABOUT IT

SPEECH OF HON. CHARLES B. RANGEL OF NEW YORK IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES MONDAY, MARCH 31, 2008

Mr. RANGEL :-

Madam Speaker, I rise today to call attention to the pressing matter of increasing violent crime in the Caribbean and to introduce a New York CARIB News editorial that eloquently elucidates the problems and speaks to possible solutions. A conflux of drugs, guns, disaffected youth, and poverty has gripped the area's island nations, particularly Jamaica, with a world-leading 59 homicides for every 100,000 people. This is an issue neither solely endemic, nor of sole concern, to the Caribbean. The international community, rather, must accept its contribution to the problem, in the way of an aggressive international drug trade and the rampant sale of small arms. The Caribbean itself must do its part to draw its youth away from criminality and hopelessness, and invest in their educations and financial security.

GUNS, DRUGS AND MURDER A LETHAL COMBINATION IN CARIBBEAN--WHERE IS THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY AND GUN MAKERS?
``The Caribbean Sun, sea and murder.''

That unsettling headline atop an equally disturbing story about violence in the Caribbean was summarized in a shocking fashion by The Economist, one of the English language's leading weekly news publications.

``Indeed,'' it stated, ``the Caribbean better known for its blue skies, cricket and rum punch, is the world leader in violent crime.''

While that may be something of an over-statement, the fact of the matter is that the picture is deeply troubling and needs urgent attention, not simply by Caribbean governments but the international community.

Some numbing figures tell much of the story about homicides in a part of the world where people and their government are wedded to law and order, tranquility and democracy. With 59 homicides for every 100,000 persons in the country, Jamaica heads the list as ``t he world's most murderous country,'' according to the magazine. Some distance away were St. Vincent & the Grenadines 36; Belize 33; St. Kitts-Nevis 32; Trinidad and Tobago 30; the Bahamas 25; and Antigua & Barbuda 23 for every 100,000 persons.

It's not difficult to figure out why this tragic situation has evolved in a part of the world that's known as a bit of paradise on earth. Drugs, guns and disaffected youth sum up the story. Add poverty to the mix and the situation comes into proper perspective.

The Caribbean has been the soft underbelly of the international drug trade for decades. Illegal narcotics, especially cocaine and some heroin are ferried through the region from South America by Colombia, Bolivia and Venezuela and destined for North America and Europe.

In addition, some Caribbean states, including Jamaica and St. Vincent & the Grenadines are considered by law enforcement authorities in the United States and Ca nada a s significant marijuana growers.

Because guns and ammunition are companions in the nefarious drug trade, it shouldn't come as a surprise to learn there is a flood of small arms in the region. Almost every country has reported a rising incidence of the use of guns in criminal activity. Law enforcement authorities are reporting more and more cases of drug-related offences in which guns are a factor. Next are the armed robberies; kidnappings, shootings, and as the story indicated homicides.

The countries seem unable to stem the drug tide and the importation of guns. With wide open waterways and beaches, most of them find it virtually impossible to put a dent in violent crime. Perhaps the most dramatic and frightening incident in recent years was the massacre in Lusignan, the East Coast Demerara village of East Indians late last month. Eleven men, women and children were slaughtered in their homes by criminals. The killing of a soldier by a merciless g ang br ought the death toll to an appalling dozen persons. What then can be and must be done?

Caribbean governments are already diverting scarce resources from education, health, roads, bridges, services to the elderly and the youth in order to boost law enforcement. They recognize two things: (1) their nationals and businesses must be able to feel safe on the streets, stores, offices, factories and homes, and (2) the vital tourism industry can be undermined if visitors stop going to the beautiful destinations because of a fear of crime.

Interestingly, crime and violence aren't always seen by the populace as pressing issues. They barely registered on the political radar screens during recently general election campaigns in the Bahamas, Jamaica and Barbados. But in Trinidad and Tobago where kidnappings and killings drive fear into people's hearts, there are growing calls for the use of capital punishment as something of a deterrent.

Already, t he pri sons in almost every nation are overcrowded and except for the acquisition of sophisticated equipment, more powerful guns and better training of cops, there is nothing that the countries have not already tried.

Crime has featured prominent at the summits of the region's heads of government and the subject is expected to be raised again.

But the international community must also do its part. Until the United States and Europe in particular address the issue of the demand for illegal narcotics, the Caribbean would remain highly vulnerable. Washington must also re-evaluate its stance at the United Nations and elsewhere on the sale of small arms. The Caribbean isn't a producer or exporter of guns, yet deadly weapons are in the hands of people everywhere. At a time when the U.S. is said to be fighting terrorists at home, most of the guns being used to kill people next door in its neighbors have a made in U.S. label on them.

The world's rich coun tries can ill-afford to turn a blind eye to the peril caused by the twin evils of guns and drugs.

Of course, the Caribbean must deal with the problem of disaffected poor youths, most of them males, who have seemingly lost their way and have little desire for an education that would enable them to become productive citizens. That's a dangerous trend because in the years ahead, the islands and coastal states would have hundreds of thousands of people who are unprepared for the challenges of life in a highly sophisticated world. That would heighten frustration and can lead to more crime.

Bringing back hanging isn't going to solve anything. The death penalty has never been an effective deterrent to curb crime.

The international community must consider rising crime in developing countries as a global issue that requires financial and other resources. The poorer states too must join hands to tackle the problem.

Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados are acting wisely in strengthening their coast guard and other security forces to ``choke the influx of drugs, and guns,'' recognizing that success in a few countries would simply mean the narcotics merchants would find another route to ply their trade.

My apologies for the sparse updates - this has been for health and other reasons.

Just as a reminder,

There are three major sectors to this website:

1.Oldies - information and photos in the past that are of some historical value to the folks who visit the site. In this area, I have run out of updates and in particular photos. If you would like this to be updated, I would need you  to submit old images with as much info on those images and this should be sent by e-mail. Posting material to me (been done a couple of times) is risky and costly for the sender and for me to return the images. In my vision for the site I would really like this to be the major theme - somewhat like a "St.Vincent Museum on the Internet".

2. Obituaries - unfortunately I get fairly regular updates and this area has taken on a life of its own - a little too active for my liking.

3. Guest Book allows people to leave messages and information on how they can be contacted - a great way of reconnecting with old friends.  Of course, you the viewers are in control of these updates and once in a while, I will clean up duplicate entries.

I do have some photos which are relatively 'current' but I would like to keep this to a minimum.

Even though I try to submit the odd items of news from and about St.Vincent, this is a difficult task living here in Canada and I don't want  and I am unable, to compete with the current newspapers in St.Vincent. I do have various links on this page that allow you to get news about St.Vincent. When there are major events (earthquakes, Hurricanes) , I ocassionally get e-mails with info that I may post for the sake of expediency.  I also try and support the dissemination of information from some Associations in North America about their programs when it is made available to me.

This is our site where I have spent hundreds of dollars of my own money and of course, there is no revenue coming in from advertisements etc.  The time to keep it current is the hardest task over a 5 year period. Anyone out there that would like to partner with me to update it on a 'regular' basis' can send me an e-maill by hitting the 'e-mail me' button on the top left of this screen.  You would need to have some very basic web skills.

Old time sayings:
Man who eat many prunes get good run for money.
Man who drive like hell, bound to get there.
Man who fight with wife all day get no piece at night.

Joke:
A little old man shuffled slowly into an ice cream parlor and pulled himself slowly, painfully, up onto a stool. After catching his breath, he ordered a banana split.
The waitress asked kindly, "Crushed nuts?"
"No," he replied, "Arthritis."

e-mail from Kerwyn Morris re page 115 on the web (Jesuit Massacre)

Hi Tony;
I am truly glad to see the abovementioned document making the site.
Several years ago as we approached Statehood I  worked on publicising
this very document which was then known to only a few Vincies.
With the help of Frank Rojas and Johnny Alves I was able to convince
Mr. Joshua to commission the Govt. Printery to do the job.
One hundred copies were made and were given to Mrs Lorna Small of the Public Library.
What happened after that I do not know but I still have my tattered copy.
It was Alphie Roberts who first drew my attention to the document.
Kerwyn.

I offer my sincere sympathies to the family and friends of the following:
